You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)

Amy Hempel

I'm on my second book of short stories by Amy Hempel (Tumble Home, having finished Reasons to Live) and I wondered what you all thought of her work. Her writing style strikes me as very economical (like Didion's fiction) but uplifting (veering toward but fortunately not quite reaching saccharine territory). What are your thoughts?

Also, I can't wait for my school's library to get Joan's new book. I'd go out and buy it, but I'm too broke to justify spending $25 on a hardcover book, especially since I recently purchased a hardcover copy of Where I Was From at a book outlet for a mere $4.99 and a paperback copy of Political Fictions for $2.99.
